South African passport strengthens on global rankings

South Africa has re-entered the ranks of the world’s 50 strongest passports, according to the latest Henley Passport Index.

This shift in position signals a turn in the nation’s passport power, climbing from 53rd to 48th place between 2024 and 2025.

The Henley Passport Index is a comprehensive ranking that assesses the visa-free access of 199 passports across 227 global destinations. Based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and bolstered by research from Henley & Partners, this index offers a critical insight into the fluid dynamics of global mobility.

At the top of the index, Singapore continues to hold its prestigious rank as the world’s most powerful passport, granting access to 193 destinations without the need for a visa, as reported by BusinessTech.

Following closely behind are Japan and South Korea, both of which allow their passport holders to travel to 190 countries without prior permission.

The race for powerful passports keeps European nations in strong positions, with Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, and Spain collectively tying for third place with visa-free access to 189 countries.

South Africa’s ascent to the 48th position has been considered good news, especially after experiencing a significant drop from 41st to 53rd in 2015. Although South Africa began the current ranking period in the top 50, it briefly fell out before bouncing back, ultimately indicating potential shifts in global perceptions about travel ease and accessibility.

However, it is essential to note that South Africa’s improved position has been influenced more by the decline of other nations’ standings than by an increase in the number of countries that South African passport holders can access visa-free.

Currently, South Africa’s passport allows free travel to 103 countries, despite the loss of this privilege for significant destinations such as Ireland and Nigeria. Ireland revoked its visa-free status due to increasing fraudulent activities linked to South African passports, while Nigeria transitioned to an e-visa system aimed at curbing illegal trading practices.

Despite these setbacks, the South African passport remains relatively robust as it navigates through an increasingly competitive global travel landscape, demonstrating resilience amidst a backdrop of restrictive policies in other regions.
