DJ Sumbody murder case breaks open – arrests made

The 2022 killing of DJ Sumbody, a case that had been unofficially deemed as cold by the public, has made some progress recently with a few arrests being made.

This comes weeks after General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s explosive press briefing where he hinted that an AK-47 and pistol which were seized by the police were linked to the incident via a ballistic test.

“The three hitmen and alleged mastermind are facing three counts of murder, these charges include the murder of DJ Sumbody and his two bodyguards, Sibusiso Mokoena and Sandile Myeza,” says police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.

What has captured the public’s attention is the arrest of Gauteng businessman Katiso ‘KT’ Molefe in connection to the murder, as he has been nabbed as the mastermind behind the hit. The revelation has had the public scratching their heads trying to put pieces of this complex case together.

To make matters more interesting, Molefe had been out on bail when he was arrested this week. He was previously arrested in connection to a separate case involving the 2024 murder of engineer Armand Swart, and was out on bail despite concerns of him being a flight risk.

The public has criticised South Africa’s criminal justice system, highlighting how research has shown that perpetrators of some heinous crimes were repeat offenders who slipped through the cracks of the system.
