Highlights from Simon Sabela KZN Film and TV Awards ceremony

The Durban ICC shone with glitz and glam as actors, producers, directors, and other members of the film and television fraternity were honoured with awards for their outstanding work at the 12th annual Simon Mabhunu Sabela Awards.

The awards seek to recognise outstanding achievements and excellence within the South African Film and Television industry, with a special focus on KwaZulu-Natal.

The star-studded event honoured legends for paving the way, and newcomers for engraving their names in the industry and rewriting the game.

The red carpet exuded elegance and glamour, with attendees dressed in bold and regal attire following the evening’s theme of Africa’s Giants of Storytelling: From Piers to Pages.

Prolific celebrated figures who attended the event included Alizwa Sikhafungana, Nkanyiso Makhanya, Hope Mbhele, Nay Maps, Zamuntu Khoza, Musa Mseleku, Smangele Mhlongo and Khaya Dladla among others.

One of the winners who stood out was Angus Gibson, who was awarded a Lifetime achievement for his groundbreaking work on Isibaya and Shaka iLembe. Among other notable productions, Angus has also worked on Yizo Yizo and Zone 14.

Speaking to News24, Angus said: “As Bomb, whenever we tell a story, we want the characters we depict to recognise themselves. For the last 12 years, with both Isibaya and Shaka iLembe we have been immersed in a Zulu world, so it is from the KZN audience that we most want approval. This award is an affirmation that makes me very happy.”
