Connie Chiume Film Festival set to take center stage on Mandela Day

by Sergio Miller

The late veteran actress, Connie Chiume’s legacy will soon be celebrated following the announcement of a new Film Festival that will be launched in her honour.

The actress best known for her roles in Black Panther, Zone 14, and Blessers passed away in August 2024, sending shockwaves throughout the local and international entertainment community.

As we near the first anniversary since her death, the inaugural Connie Chiume Youth International Film Festival will be launched on Mandela Day, 18th July, and on the 19th July at the Sibikwa Arts Centre in Benoni.

The two-day festival will showcase a diverse selection of films by young and up-and-coming filmmakers, all eager to showcase their creative abilities. Each project aims to showcase fresh perspectives that will resonate with young people across the continent.

Meanwhile, her daughter, Nothando Mabuza, who is also the Executive Producer for the festival, described the event as being more than just a celebration of emerging talent, but says that it is a vital platform that gives students a real opportunity in the film industry to tell their stories and build meaningful careers.

“It empowers communities, inspires creativity, and helps create sustainable employment in the arts. Most importantly, it keeps my mother’s legacy alive — a legacy rooted in passion, perseverance, and the belief in uplifting others,” she explained.

Her work will also be remembered with the airing of What Did You Dream?, directed by Karabo Lediga and starring Connie where viewers will have the opportunity to once again admire her for the standout actress she was.
