General Mkhwanazi KZN’s top cop: The man taking on crime

by Silindokuhle Booi

Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is a highly respected figure in the South African Police Service (SAPS). He is known for his dedication to protecting communities and fighting crime in the KwaZulu-Natal province. He has also been instrumental in driving crime-fighting strategies and promoting professionalism within the police service.

In 2025, General Mkhwanazi has continued to demonstrate his commitment to upholding the values of the badge through various efforts. He has led crackdowns on organised crime and drug syndicates, gaining public trust in areas long plagued by criminal activity. Mkhwanazi has further emphasised the importance of police accountability and transparency, working to build trust between law enforcement and local communities.

Recently, he outlined the police’s crime-fighting plans, highlighting the need for more police visibility, faster responses, and a crackdown on illegal liquor outlets driving violent crime. Additionally, Mkhwanazi has been vocal about tackling corruption within the SAPS and has made damning allegations against high-ranking officials and politicians.

His leadership represents a new model for policing, one that prioritises community engagement, transparency, and results. His ability to navigate political dynamics while remaining steadfast in his mission to protect KZN’s communities showcases both character and competence. As a result, some residents, especially in areas hardest hit by crime, are beginning to feel a renewed sense of safety and trust in the police.

General Mkhwanazi stands for integrity, accountability, community policing, crime-fighting, and professionalism. He believes in upholding the highest standards of integrity and ethics in policing. He has also been vocal about the need for police officers to act with professionalism and accountability.

His commitment to community policing has helped build relationships with local communities and promote trust in the police.

His dedication to tackling crime and corruption has also led to significant efforts in disrupting organised crime syndicates and promoting a safer environment for all citizens.

“I will die for this badge” are the words he uttered at a recent press briefing as he reaffirmed his commitment to fighting crime.
