One of the most watched SABC1’s soapies, Skeem Saam, is reportedly embroiled in contractual disputes following an alleged change in their contracts.
Entertainment commentator Phil Mphela reported on his X (formerly Twitter) page that on March 31, the technical crew contract expired, and employees were informed it would be extended for 15 days.
However, on June 12, the crew was informed that they would not be contracted for the full Season 14 but will only receive 8-week contracts.
“Through an email, made privy to this author, the crew was informed of a production break between April 16th and May 31st, citing preparations and negotiations for Season 14,” he said.
Phil added that during that preparation period and the above mentioned break in April, it is alleged by sources that the production company had assured the technical crew that their jobs are secured. However, they were shocked by the June 12 notification about limited contacts.
“It is alleged that they were told on June 12 to report to work on Monday, June 16, on an 8-week contract, not a full season. Sources inform me that some employees are upset and feel misled and sabotaged by the situation. This comes hot off the heels of the production having had to halt shooting the show because payments were delayed,” said Phil.
Skeem Saam, which became the fan favourites boasts with a stellar cast that includes Harriet Manamela, Clement Maosa, Africa Tsoai, Eric Macheru, and Hungani Ndlovu among others.
The soapie was first introduced to mzansi on October 13, 2011 where it initially aired weekly on Thursdays. The show was created by Winnie Serite and set against the backdrop of three teenagers who are navigating life’s challenges in Johannesburg and Turfloop.
