3 Times South Africans hosted international award ceremonies

by Sergio Miller

Tyla’s success on the global stage is proof that South Africans possess the star power to shine on some of the biggest stages around the globe.

Known for vibrant nature and impressive vocal abilities, the 23-year-old singer from Joburg dazzled the crowd, proving that her skills on the microphone have not been limited solely to the sweet melodies that come out of her mouth.

While the world continues to digest what has been a “full circle” moment from the Bliss hitmaker, it is perhaps safe to say her recent success as a host may have something to do with her South African heritage.

Over the years our country has seen a number of our top media personalities grace the stage at some of the world’s biggest international award ceremonies. Not only did we live up to expectation, but also managed to shine alongside some global greats.

In this article we look back on three South Africans who have managed to impress on the global stage.

Trevor Noah – Grammy Awards

Following his inclusion as the successor of Jon Steward as the host of the Daily Show in 2015, Trevor has cemented his name as one of the elite talents to come out of South Africa. The position not only provided him with a platform to engage with the American audience, but also saw him take his stand-up career to the next level – with this came a wealth of opportunity.

This saw him host the Grammy Awards for a record 5 consecutive times, the most out of any comedian.

Nomzamo Mbatha – Global Citizen Awards

As a global citizen ambassador and a recognised humanitarian, Nomzamo Mbatha hosted the fifth Global Citizen Awards ceremony in New York in 2023.
