Gareth Cliff takes jabs at President Ramaphosa

by Silindokuhle Booi

Gareth Cliff is making waves on social media with his outspoken comments about South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The former Idols SA judge sparked controversy after reacting to a viral video of an MK Party member in parliament. Gareth slammed Ramaphosa for sharing a post about economic growth and transformation, saying, “We’ve had plenty of transformation, and no growth. You’ve had 30 years to prove it. You have failed completely.”

The public’s response was swift, with many taking to the comment section to share their thoughts.

Some questioned the balance between growth and transformation, with one user asking, “Would it have been better to have had lots of growth and no transformation?”

Another user took a historical perspective, comparing the current state of the economy to the Stone Age, saying, “Let’s go further back to the Stone Age. They had all the same resources. The settler used the resources, carved stone to cut trees and build tools, machines, and infrastructure. Why couldn’t they do it?”

Some users supported Gareth’s stance, urging him to hold all participants in the economic scheme accountable.

One user commented, “Gareth, you must hold all participants of the scheme accountable, even major corporations.”

Another user chimed in, “Major corporations were happy to give only three of these ANC fossils shares at the beginning (Macozoma, Sexwale, and Ramaphosa). Now we are here.”

The debate highlights the complexities of South Africa’s economic challenges and the ongoing discussions about transformation and growth. As a public figure, Gareth Cliff’s comments have sparked a necessary conversation about accountability and the role of leadership in shaping the country’s economic future.

The reactions from netizens demonstrate the diversity of opinions on the matter, with some defending Ramaphosa’s efforts and others criticizing his presidency. The discussion also touches on broader themes, such as the legacy of apartheid and the responsibility of corporations in driving economic growth.

Ultimately, the controversy surrounding Gareth Cliff’s comments about Cyril Ramaphosa serves as a reminder of the importance of open dialogue and critical thinking in addressing the challenges facing South Africa’s economy.
