Grief has its ups and downs. One minute, one is feeling fine, the next they are wailing, and hearts become heavy as if the tragedy has just struck now.
As much as it is said that time heals all wounds, one would beg to differ and say, one learns to live in the absence of their loved ones. Lynn Forbes, mother of multi-award-winning slain rapper, Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes, recently shared her grief journey and how it has altered her.
AKA tragically passed away two years ago, after he was shot in the head in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
In a candid post, Lynn took to her Instagram page to share the heart-wrenching moments through her grief journey. She shared a video clip of her jogging in the forest, with the sound of a hysterical cry, accompanied by the question: “How has grief altered you?”
Taking the stage first, she shared how this sound took her back to when she received the news that her son was no more, two years ago.
“In that moment, on my knees, on the floor, I knew I would never be the same, and I have never been. Grief has altered me forever, but in that transformation, I found a deeper way of living. Now, I value life, moments, presence, and above all, peace, more than anything else- peace,” she penned.
Lynn also mentioned that she carries Kiernan in everything she does. She shared that it feels like the only way she can honour his memory is to live how AKA lived; living fully, unapologetically, with love and joy.

Instagram users also weighed in.
“Mama Forbes, if only you knew how much we miss him too. Life has never been the same since. The silence is unbearable but we soldier on. Your son was amazing,” said one user.
While another one said: “It really cuts deep. I sometimes day-dream that I knew him personally due to the connection I have with his music, he has left us with so much to remember him by, RIP SuperMega.”
