The South African Health Ombud has opted to escalate and probe further into the tragic and unexpected death of medical intern Alulutho Mazwi, who succumbed to illness after he was allegedly forced to work despite voicing health concerns.

As requested by the Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, health ombud Professor Taole Mokoena has launched an investigation into the untimely death of medical intern Alulutho Mazwi, who died while on duty at Durban’s Prince Mshiyeni hospital, despite raising health concerns to his superiors.

According to prof Taole, the investigation seeks to determine the events leading up to Alulutho’s death, and furthermore, it will be evaluating the working conditions that healthcare proffessionals are subjected to at Prince Mshiyeni, as some have come out to express frustration at consistently being overworked and underpaid.

“We extend our deepest condolences to Dr Mazwi’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time. This investigation aims to provide clarity and closure for those affected, helping them understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident,” Prof Taole says.

The Public Servant’s Association has expressed that they believe that Dr Alulutho’s unfortunate death is the result of the larger systemic rot that plagues South Africa’s health department. According to the organisation, Dr Alulutho is only one of the many proffessionals who are forced to work extremely long hours, and neglect their own health and well-being.

“This devastating incident is a culmination of what the Public Servants Association has consistently warned the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health about, related to inhumane working conditions, autocratic leadership and abuse of power at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital. The association has previously picketed and delivered memoranda to the head of department and the MEC for health, raising serious concerns about ill-treatment of staff,” the association says.
