Delicate but bold: Styling lace for the cosy season

Lace might seem like a fabric reserved for spring weddings or summer soirées, but don’t be too quick to stash it away when the temperatures drop. With the right layering and styling, lace can become a surprisingly versatile and chic winter wardrobe staple.

Its delicate texture adds a romantic, feminine contrast to the heavy knits and structured layers we usually reach for in the colder months. Whether you’re embracing your soft-girl era or looking to add just a hint of elegance to your everyday look, lace can be your secret winter styling weapon.

Here’s how to wear — and love — lace in winter.

Why lace works in winter

The beauty of lace lies in its contrast. In winter, when everything from fashion to weather feels heavy and dark, lace brings in an unexpected softness. It adds texture and visual interest to even the simplest outfits. Think of it like frost on a windowpane — intricate, beautiful, and quietly dramatic.

3 winter lace styling tips

1. Layer lace with texture for warmth and contrast

Pair a lace blouse or lace-trimmed cami with chunky knit cardigans, oversized wool blazers, or even a shearling-lined jacket. The contrast between delicate and rugged is endlessly chic — think a black lace top under a grey cable-knit sweater, with just the edges peeking out.

Style tip: Style a white lace turtleneck under a sleeveless sweater dress or a slouchy knit vest. Add tights and knee-high boots for a cosy, elevated look.

2. Go dark and moody with your lace palette

In summer, lace leans light and airy. In winter, opt for lace in deeper tones like black, burgundy, forest green, navy, or chocolate brown. These rich shades feel luxurious and seasonally appropriate while still giving off that graceful lace aesthetic.

Style tip: A dark lace midi skirt paired with a cashmere turtleneck and tall boots makes for an unexpectedly sultry (and warm!) winter date night look.

3. Use lace accents to soften structured pieces

If you’re not ready for full-on lace, start small. Look for lace accents on cuffs, collars, or hemlines to add a subtle, feminine flair. Lace-trimmed socks, scarves, or gloves can also add interest without compromising warmth.

Style tip: A crisp button-down shirt with lace-trimmed sleeves under a tailored coat or blazer softens a corporate outfit without losing its edge.

Wearing lace in winter is all about contrast — light vs. heavy, delicate vs. structured, soft vs. strong. With a little creativity, you can turn lace into a year-round fabric that brings depth and romance to your cold-weather wardrobe.

Don’t be afraid to layer, go moody with your colour palette, and embrace the feminine energy lace can bring — even when the snow is falling outside.
