In the music industry, having the right management can save you from a lot of things.
Recently, Scotts Maphuma has been topical due to his unacceptable behaviour. His backlash started when videos of him refusing to take pictures with fans surfaced.
In those videos, Scotts either dismissed a fan impolitely or ignored them. Soon after, he was invited to L-Tido’s podcast, where he shared his side of the story, saying that he does not owe anyone a picture.
“No one made me famous, so I do not owe anyone a picture,” he said.
This was not received well by Mzantsi, and they were so ready to cancel him that he lost a few gigs because of this. This behaviour was perceived as rude and ungrateful, leading to widespread criticism.
He then soon apologised to his fans for his seemingly dismissive behaviour towards them. In a live session with DJ Maphorisa, Scotts was reminded of the backlash and took the opportunity to issue a sincere apology. He stated, “To those who are angry with me, I’m sorry. It is a misunderstanding. It doesn’t make sense for Scotts to have an attitude.”
However, I feel like if he had a good management team, we wouldn’t be questioning their management skills.
A management team is crucial in guiding an artist’s public image and interactions with fans. In Scotts Maphuma’s case, his team’s strategy seems to be under scrutiny, with these being the issues in my opinion.
Lack of guidance: Scotts’ behaviour towards fans might indicate that his management team isn’t providing adequate guidance on maintaining a positive public image.
Insufficient crisis management: The way Scotts Maphuma handled the situation initially might suggest that his team wasn’t prepared to address the crisis effectively.
Scotts Maphuma’s comments about not owing anyone anything might imply that his team prioritises his artistic freedom over fan engagement and public relations.
Ultimately, the effectiveness of Scotts Maphuma’s management team will depend on how they navigate future challenges and prioritise his public image and fan engagement.
His apology has been well-received by fans, with many responding positively to his gesture. Scotts seems to have taken the criticism to heart, choosing to humble himself and apologise to his fans.
