Sipho Alphi Mkhwanazi shares the magic of KZN’s scenic routes

In a world increasingly dominated by digital experiences, there is a magic in physical exploration that virtual reality cannot replicate.

From the wind on your face as you drive along the coast, that first breathtaking view when you crest a mountain pass, to the moment when you step into a hotel lobby and know you’ve found a special place. These are the experiences that remind us we live in a country of extraordinary beauty.

I believe that each South African should experience the wonder of our incredible country for themselves, a feeling reinforced by the time I spent travelling through KwaZulu-Natal on the second edition of the Sasol Mzansi Tour. More than a journey, the tour was a revelation of what South Africa offers when we venture outside our comfort zones.

There’s something therapeutic about planning a road trip. The anticipation builds as you trace routes on maps, research destinations, and imagine the adventures ahead. But in our rush to board planes and seek international shores, many of us have neglected the treasure trove of experiences available just a few hours’ drive away from our homes.

KwaZulu-Natal alone offers a staggering diversity of landscapes and experiences. From the majestic peaks of the Drakensberg to the warm waters of the Indian Ocean coastline, this province encapsulates what makes domestic travel so rewarding – access to vastly different worlds.

The Drakensberg, our country’s most impressive mountain range, offers a retreat into nature. Here, morning hikes through misty valleys and evenings spent stargazing remind you of South Africa’s majesty. Drive East towards the coast, and Umhlanga presents an entirely different experience, cosmopolitan luxury with the endless ocean as your backdrop. The promenade walks at sunset, with the iconic lighthouse standing sentinel, create memories that stay with you long after checkout.

Further North, the intimate charm of a boutique hotel in Ballito offers personalised hospitality that large chains cannot match. Its proximity to pristine beaches makes it perfect for relaxation and adventure. And for those who prefer their coastal experience with a side of sporting excellence, San Lameer combines breathtaking ocean views with world-class golfing.

This road trip has revealed something deeper than just beautiful locations. It has been shown that travel within our borders is about reconnecting with our country, with each other, and with ourselves. There’s something uniquely South African about the conversations struck up at viewpoints, the recommendations shared over breakfast tables, and the collective pride when showing fellow travellers your favourite hidden spots. The journey itself holds as much value as the destination.
