What to prepare for before laser hair removal session

So, you’ve finally booked that laser hair removal appointment—goodbye, razors and surprise ingrown hairs! But before you strut into the clinic, glowing with pre-smooth confidence, there are a few things you need to know to make your session as effective (and comfortable) as possible.

First things first: ditch the wax. According to the Cleveland Clinic, laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment in the hair follicle, so if you’ve recently waxed, plucked, or epilated, the laser will not be able to zap it. Instead, shave the area 24 hours before your appointment. This keeps the root intact while sparing your skin from unnecessary irritation.

Sunbathers, skip the beach days or tanning beds for at least two weeks before your session. Healthline warns that sun exposure can increase your risk of burns and hyperpigmentation. That “sun-kissed glow” might cost you more than your vacation did.

Skip the lotions, deodorants, and makeup on treatment day. Clean, dry skin is best to avoid interference with the laser. Your aesthetician needs a blank canvas, not a perfumed masterpiece.

If you’re worried about discomfort (because let’s be honest—some spots are spicy), you can ask about numbing creams. Some clinics provide it, but it’s best to confirm ahead of time.

Also, manage those expectations. Laser hair removal is a process. As the American Academy of Dermatology notes, you’ll likely need multiple sessions spaced weeks apart. Hair grows in cycles, and lasers can only catch follicles in the active growth phase.

Lastly, bring your patience and your water bottle. Hydrated skin heals better, and good things (like baby-smooth legs) come to those who prep. Smooth skin, here you come—laser-focused and fully ready.
