Mzansi has been left in shock and laughter as an internet user shared clips of their neighbour who opted to get married right in the comfort of their complex buildings. This has led us to wonder whether things like this are going to be the new norm.
For the longest time, due to South Africa’s historical context, even with the prevalence of urbanisation, a significant part of the black community reserved significant events and ceremonies such as weddings to either a hired venue in the city, or the comfort of their yard in their ‘traditional’ homes in the rural areas.
However, with the collective move from the rural areas to urban areas such as Johannesburg and Cape Town, this has meant certain cultural practices and norms have started to shift according to the times. For instance, cohabiting, which was once seen as taboo and shunned in some cultures, has become somewhat of a norm in present society, mostly due to economic and social reasons.
TikTok user @lindo-thabede has gained the attention of many internet users who have expressed genuine shock at his revelation of his neighbours from his complex hosting parts of their matrimonial ceremony in the yard of said complex.

The clip has spread through various social media platforms, and has some users revealing that this was the first time seeing something of this nature, and expressed genuine curiosity about how the couple went about things. These users wonder how other inhabitants of the complex were affected by the ceremony, specifically in terms of the noise and general inconvenience. Furthermore, users wonder whether the couple had to ask for permission from the complex owners or not, and whether some residents joined in on the festivities.
