Kenny G delighted by his unknowing role at SA weddings

What is a South African wedding without the soothing sounds of smooth jazz saxophonist Kenny G?

In a tradition almost as old as time, when the MC announces that the buffet line is ready, those soulful tunes we know and love kick in.

The artist, who is returning to South African shores for the third time, will be performing on 1 October at the ICC in Durban, 2 October at the Grand Arena in Cape Town, and 4 October at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria. He last performed here in 1998 and 2014.

Kenny G, whose real name is Kenny Gorelick, made this discovery in an interview with Smile FM’s Phil de Lange.

When asked if he knew that his music is often played at weddings and family functions, specifically when people are waiting for the food to arrive, the 68-year-old quipped, “So not when people are walking down the aisle?”

He said he was happy to learn this tidbit and that it made him smile.

His wedding hit list includes ‘The Wedding Song’, ‘Forever in Love’, and ‘Songbird’, and he can add Grammy, American Music, NAACP Image, and Soul Train Music Awards to his cap.

His career in the music industry started in the mid-70s, and he’s still going strong.

He joins a long list of big names performing in the country this summer, with Travis Scott bringing his ‘Circus Maximus Tour’, R&B songstress Summer Walker headlining ‘Rocking the Daisies’, and Doja Cat’s long-awaited homecoming at the ‘Hey Neighbour Festival’.
