MacG on DSTV partnership: Podcasting and Traditional media can work together

by Sergio Miller

Renowned podcaster Macgyver Mukwevho is more than convinced that his latest collaboration with Multichoice is what is best for the business going forward.

Last week, the South African-based video entertainment company announced that they would be shaking things up with the introduction of eight podcast shows coming to DSTV channels, Mzansi Magic and Mzansi Wethu as of April.

The list of shows set to air includes many of South Africa’s most loved YouTube podcasts such as Podcast and Chill with Mac G, Against The Wall with Skeem GP, Awkward Dates with Lasizwe, Joseph Dary, People Need Comedy with Mpho Popps, Spreading Humours, Open Chats Podcast and Piano Pulse.

In a statement, M-Net’s channel director Shirly Adonisi expressed excitement ahead of the partnership describing it as a fearless leap into the future.

“These creators have reshaped entertainment, and now they’re bringing their energy to traditional TV. We’re thrilled to lead this transformation,” she revealed.

While this project marks the first of its kind, there have been some who have been pessimistic about having something that works well online now being transferred to mainstream where things could go south.

Others feel that it’s an act of laziness on Multichoice’s end as they are unable to produce quality content of their own.

However, MacG who has gained a big following for his show Podcast and Chill believes that the partnership is in the best interest for the growth of his show.

In a recent interview with the entertainment publication, Citizen News, he said: “Our audience has always dictated where we go. We’ve built a strong community digitally, and now we’re bringing that energy to TV, showing that podcasting and traditional media can complement each other.”

He revealed that the partnership was made possible through Leading Edge Growth, a company representing content creators.

“They brought us and other content creators together and pitched the concept to DStv. DStv saw the value, believed in the vision, and the rest is history.”

In reflecting on the last 7 years of the show he added that the main objective was to remain relevant in the entertainment space after his time on radio, however, he soon realised that creating the podcast may have been one of his best decisions.

“The podcast grew beyond that, and the audience showed us we didn’t need to wait for a radio comeback. We built our own platform, and now partnering with MultiChoice is proof that betting on yourself works.”
