‘Hard to believe its been 365 days’ Jacky Phamotse reflects on house arrest

by Sergio Miller

It is often said that time flies when you are having fun, but for award-winning author Jacky Phamotse, this same statement doesn’t exactly hit the same.

The author, best known for her books The Tea Merchant and Bare, has been put under two years of house arrest following her defamatory remarks on former Miss South Africa title holder Basetsana Kumalo and her husband Romeo.

The couple dragged Jacky to caught after she previously took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), alleging that they were involved in a sex tape and had a threesome while hinting that Romeo was gay.

The court later found her guilty on four charges — including defamation, crimen injuria, and violating a protection order and she was later issued a fine and placed under house arrest.

In a recent post on X, the renowned author reflected on life after serving one-half of her house arrest sentence.

“It’s hard to believe it’s been 365 days since my world shrunk to the confines of my home. At first, the isolation felt suffocating, the uncertainty overwhelming.”

She further added: “The initial frustration and anger gave way to reflection and introspection. I was forced to confront my own demons, to examine my actions, and to take responsibility for my mistakes. It wasn’t easy, but it was necessary. I’ve learned to appreciate the value of solitude, to cherish the quiet moments, and find comfort in my own company. Despite the physical constraints, I’ve discovered new ways to explore, to learn, and to grow. I’ve devoured books, taken online courses, and connected with people from all over the world.”

While life for any human being can become so busy that one starts neglecting the time to rest, Jack now sees her house arrest as a blessing in disguise.

“It’s forced me to confront my flaws, to work on my personal growth, and to develop a deeper appreciation for life. It gave me the rest I needed. After producing 11 books back-to-back, I was tired.”
