The ultimate family adventure guide for long weekends

by Staff Bona

The first bit of the year always seems to fly by, and before you know it, March has arrived with the promise of a well-earned break. Luckily, South Africa is brimming with adventure, and it’s no secret that South Africans love a long weekend, so 20 to 23 March presents the perfect opportunity to go exploring.

Whether you’re after a quick city escape, a scenic road trip, or a thrill-seeking experience, there’s no need to travel far or spend a fortune to make the most of the time off. From awe-inspiring landscapes to adrenaline-fueled activities, Hi-Tec has rounded up some of the best adventures across the country to turn your long weekend into an unforgettable one.

Western Cape

For those seeking adventure and relaxation in one weekend, the Western Cape’s rugged landscapes offer an unforgettable escape. Start your journey with a moderate sunrise hike up Lion’s Head, a hike that is accessible to beginner hikers. After the descent, refuel with a hearty breakfast at Our Local, a cosy eatery in Gardens with an inviting atmosphere and wholesome fare.

From there, embark on a scenic drive to Miller’s Point Tidal Pool which is just five kilometres south of Simon’s Town. This lesser-known tidal pool, framed by natural rock formations, features a grassy lounging area perfect for unwinding throughout the day. Accessible braai facilities and convenient changing rooms allow for your group to make the trip a whole day affair. Given that you’ll want to spend hours in the pool’s refreshing water, don’t forget to pack adequate sun protection – Hi-Tec’s Roam hat, made from 100% nylon is designed with practicality in mind, it features straps that securely fastens under the chin, keeping the hat in place during windy conditions and active adventures.

As the next morning rolls in, make your way to Cherry Glamping in Elgin, an eco-friendly retreat offering luxury tents surrounded by lush forests. Spend the day exploring the mesmerising landscape of the estate and surrounding trails. Before the evening sets in, gather around a crackling fire, share stories under a starlit sky, and let nature set the rejuvenating backdrop for your long weekend escape. Before heading back home, round off the trip with a farm-style breakfast at Peregrine Farm Stall, where an order of their famous freshly baked pies is a must!

Gauteng

For those who enjoy a mix of indulgence and nature, start your day with a leisurely brunch at Akti Eatery in Rosebank. With fresh, flavourful dishes, it’s the ideal spot to fuel up before heading out to Thabametsi Farm in Magaliesburg. Just a short drive away from central Joburg, this tranquil retreat offers a family-friendly camping setup, where you can unwind, go fishing, and enjoy a scenic horse ride. As the night unfolds there’s nothing better than a braai and toasted marshmallows under the stars, while the whole group embraces the stillness of the great outdoors.

Before heading back home the next morning, take a refreshing sunrise hike at Rustig Hiking Trail, where panoramic views of the Magaliesburg will make the early start well worth it. A pair of sturdy hiking boots such as Hi-Tec’s V-Lite Psych Mid WP will be your best friend on this adventure, so that you can navigate the trails with ease. These versatile hiking boots feature Dri-Tec technology to keep your feet dry throughout the journey, and the shoe’s rubber outsole assists with superior traction.

Kwa-Zulu Natal

For a weekend steeped in history and countryside charm, take a scenic drive along the Midlands Meander, a breathtaking 80km stretch teeming with captivating sights, sounds, and experiences. Start with a brunch stop at The Blueberry Café on Nottingham Road before visiting the Nelson Mandela Capture Site & Museum, where history and art come together in a moving tribute to Madiba’s legacy.

Next, a stop at Piggly Wiggly promises fun for the whole family, with activities like candle-making, zip-lining, and mini golf. When the evening rolls in, retreat to a cozy farm stay or lodge in the Midlands for a restful night amidst rolling hills and fresh country air.

Families seeking a relaxed beach day can begin with breakfast at Old Town Italy in Umhlanga before heading to Salt Rock Beach. Whether it’s swimming in the warm Indian Ocean or simply soaking up the sun, this spot is ideal for unwinding. In the afternoon, a visit to Flag Animal Farm offers an interactive experience with farm animals, making it a hit for little ones. Round off the day with a delicious meal at Fiamma Grill in Ballito before heading home.

It goes without saying that South Africa’s adventure offerings extend far beyond the above highlights. Whether you’re drawn to the serene beaches of the Eastern Cape, the mesmerising landscapes of the Drakensberg, or the untamed beauty of the Northern Cape, every corner of the country presents an opportunity for exploration. From laid-back getaways to high-energy excursions, there’s a destination to match every pace, preference, and group dynamic.

No matter where your long weekend takes you, the key is to embrace the journey, delight in the tranquillity of time spent in nature and create lasting memories with those who matter most. With the right gear and an adventurous spirit, your next escape is just waiting to be discovered.
