Mandisa ‘Zulu Mecca’ Nduna on playing a dangerous VIP bodyguard

Mandisa ‘Zulu Mecca’ Nduna is no stranger to switching things up.

Whether commanding the screen in ‘Blood Psalms’ and ‘Sew The Winter To My Skin’ or making waves in hip-hop (earning an SA Hip Hop Award nomination), she’s proven she can do it all.

Now, she’s bringing that same energy to ‘Empini’, the latest Showmax Original. She plays Mbali, a VIP security guard who’s as sharp as she is dangerous.

Working at Mkhonto Protection Services, Mbali quickly becomes a key player in Ndoni’s (Nambitha Ben-Mazwi) world.

Mandisa Nduna talks about her role in ‘Empini.’

What was it like stepping into the role of Mbali?

It was refreshing! I got to step into the action world, handling guns and protecting important people, something I don’t do in real life.

Were you hesitant about playing a masculine-presenting character?

Not at all. Mbali’s serious, disciplined, and less playful than me. I gave her a more grounded tone and walk to keep her distinct.

Mbali plays more of a supporting role – can you tell us more about her background?

Mbali comes from a tough background and her job at Mkhonto is her lifeline. In season 2, she fights to keep the company alive because losing it would make her life harder.

If you weren’t playing Mbali, which character would you want to play?

I’d love to play Jabu, the nerdy IT guy. It would be fun to put my spin on him.

How did you prepare physically for this role?

I’m active, CrossFit, and gym, so I worked on strength and mobility to make my fight scenes convincing.

Did you research private security guards?

Yes, I looked into elite bodyguards like Gaddafi’s Amazonian Guard. Mbali’s small but deadly, relying on speed and precision.

What’s your take on gun safety on set?

It’s vital. While using real guns with blanks is exciting, safety is the top priority. We stay aware during intense scenes.

Why do you think MJ Sedibo’s character, Mkhonto, is so popular?

Mkhonto’s relatable! He’s passionate but lacks the skills. His energy and delivery add humour to the show.

Why should people watch ‘Empini’ season 2?

It’s fresh, intense, and full of action. If you want something new with great twists, ‘Empini’ is the show to watch!
