Black Coffee says near-death plane crash gave him purpose

In January 2024, Grammy Award-winning South African DJ and producer Black Coffee, born Nkosinathi Maphumulo, faced a harrowing experience that left an indelible mark on his life.

While en route to a performance in Mar del Plata, Argentina, his private plane encountered severe turbulence, leading to an emergency landing in Montevideo, Uruguay.

This incident resulted in significant injuries, including damage to his upper spinal cord, necessitating immediate surgery.

This weekend, in celebration of his 49th birthday at the Black Coffee Foundation event, the DJ opened up about the tragedy.

“I became a casualty and believe I’m blessed the way I am to give back to our people,” the Daily Sun quoted him as saying.

During a previous interview last year, Black Coffee reflected on the moments leading up to the accident and recalled feeling uneasy about the aircraft’s condition.

He noted that the plane appeared aged and poorly maintained, which made him apprehensive. Despite his reservations, he proceeded with the flight, seeking solace in music.

He recounted that he reclined his seat and listened to a gospel album, finding comfort in its melodies.

Upon regaining consciousness in a hospital, he learned of the extent of his injuries. The violent turbulence had caused severe blows to his body, particularly affecting his upper spinal cord.

Doctors performed a five-hour surgery to stabilize his spine, inserting metal supports – a procedure he later lightheartedly referred to by saying, “Now I am half man, half machine.”

A year later Black Cofee has found solace in healing. “My goal is to create millions of Black Coffees and change the world,” he said.
