A memorial service to honour the life of Ebenhaezer ‘Ebby’ Dibakwane was held at The Bioscope in Johannesburg on March 12, bringing family, friends, and colleagues together to celebrate the legacy of the award-winning comedian, actor, and writer.

Ebby, who tragically passed away by suicide, was remembered not only for his remarkable comedic talent but also for his warmth and selflessness.

According to Drum, Ebby was celebrated for his ability to bring laughter to others despite his struggles with depression.

Fellow comedians took the stage, sharing heartfelt tributes and recalling the significant impact Ebby had on their lives, both professionally and personally.

Mojak Lehoko spoke about how Ebby fostered a tight-knit community of friends who truly valued him, according to Zimoja. The publication added that Chris Forest also shared a heartfelt tribute, describing Ebby as family and highlighting the strong bond they shared.

Ebby’s family confirmed the news of his death on Tuesday, with preliminary findings suggesting he died by suicide.

The family expressed their sorrow and gratitude for the overwhelming support they’ve received, acknowledging how deeply they’ve been touched by the outpouring of love during this difficult time.

“The past few days have been extremely tough as we try to come to terms with this tragedy,” they said.

They also urged that Ebby’s passing serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health and emotional well-being. “While this loss is devastating, we pray that it encourages people to check in on each other and prioritise their emotional well-being. Seeking professional help when needed is essential.”

Ebby’s funeral service is planned for March 14 at Church Unlimited in Maggiesdal, Nelspruit, starting at 7 am.

The family has also urged anyone struggling with depression or suicidal thoughts to reach out for support with the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) offering confidential assistance at 0800 567 567.
