The only breakup song playlist you’ll ever need

by Akhona Ndlela

Without question, breakups are tough. One minute you’re thinking of calling them to see if they want their hoodie back, and the next minute you’re wondering if you’ll ever be able to move on. (Spoiler alert: You are not required to, but it’s easier said than done, right? I know).

However, there are times when listening to a playlist of songs that express your emotions is just what you need. The perfect way to mend a broken heart.

Music can magically express your emotions and, more significantly, give you a sense of community. A fantastic breakup song can be your go-to therapy, whether you’re dancing like no one’s watching or sobbing into your pillow because at times we can’t find the correct words to describe the way we feel so the tears just flow like the Nile River (sorry, too dramatic?).

Music can also serve as a comforting outlet during a breakup. By reflecting on personal experiences in the particular song’s lyrics when you’re sad, angry, confused, or perhaps you want to ponder, recover, and eventually move on when listening to particular songs that remind you of the better times (oh, the good times!).

We’ve created the breakup playlist you’ll ever need, regardless of whether you’re in the “You betrayed me” or “I’m better off without you” stages of life. If I were going through a breakup,  I’d simply listen to “Never Love Again” by Eminem, but for you, we’ve added 10 incredible songs to soothe that broken heart of yours.

Babalwa M – Bo Thata

Mawoo – Ngilimele

Sjava – Before

Loyiso – Seasons

Cici – Ndidinge

Christ Brown – Residuals

Giveon – Heart Break Anniversary

Omah Lay – Understand

Sam Smith – One last song

Lewis Capaldi – Someone you loved
