The feel-good benefits of gratitude journaling

by Akhona Ndlela

Having a gratitude journal is similar to providing your mind with a daily dose of sunshine.

It’s a straightforward but profound exercise that helps you focus on the little things in life that you might take for granted at times.

According to the Calm website, taking the time to express appreciation regularly will help you think back on your day, your relationships, and your life. This can give you important information about your priorities and how you interact with the world, which ultimately increases self-awareness.

Keeping a gratitude journal might help you become a more upbeat individual. You naturally begin to anticipate more great things to happen when you’re constantly acknowledging and enjoying the positive aspects of your life, the website adds.

Gratitude journaling is also about developing a practice of gratefulness that makes you view the world more positively, not just writing down a few pleasant things now and again. Expressing appreciation regularly can elevate your mood, increase your energy levels, and foster a deeper sense of contentment.

Keeping a gratitude diary is a valuable tool for long-term emotional well-being because it rewires your perspective to continuously focus on positivity and resilience.

Verywell Mind states that you need to consider where and when you want to write in your journal. Is it before you go to bed, would you like to write in your bedroom? Which would you prefer—writing as soon as you wake up or after breakfast?

The above source also suggests other places that you could pick from, which are, a park bench, a coffee cafe, at the beach, by a garden, leaning against a tree and sitting on the grass, or even while seated on a public transport.
