WC Minister Ricardo Mackenzie offers condolences after Crystal-Donna Roberts passing

Western Cape is saddened as their beam of hope suddenly dimmed when award-winning actress Crystal-Donna Roberts passed away at the age of 40 after she bravely fought a cancer battle.

Heartfelt tributes and condolences have been pouring since the news of Crystal-Donna’s passing, including one from provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie. In a statement issued, the minister offered his condolences to Crystal-Donna’s husband, family and friends.

“Crystal was known for her many television roles and also made a name for herself on the stage. On the big screen, her portrayal of Kroata in the movie of the same name elevated her career. The versatile creative, Crystal-Donna also published a book, Speurder Sammi: Die Blou Steen in 2022.

“Crystal was a beloved member of our theatre community. Her passion for her craft was evident in all that she did. She was a true example of someone who did everything with true dedication and love. She will be greatly missed,” read the statement.

Crystal-Donna was renowned for many roles she played on Arendsvlei, 7 De Laan, Endless River and Kroata. With some of these roles earning her recognition with a number of Best Actress nominations and subsequently clinching a South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) for her portrayal of Kroata.

Additionally, the statement read: “Our condolences go out to Crystal’s husband, family and all those who worked with her and loved her over the years. Her legacy will live on, on our screens, in our theatres and in our hearts for many years to come.”

Speaking to News24, Crystal-Donna’s agent, Karen Tallie said she died at around 01h00 at her home in Cape Town, surrounded by her family. Karen also told the publication that Crystal-Donna succumbed to stage four breast cancer.
