Money Matters: Winnie Khumalo’s daughter and artist in tussle over donations

by Sergio Miller

Rethabile Khumalo, daughter to the late Winnie Khumalo, is finding herself in the middle of a dispute with Amapiano artist, Bongani “Mabboza waseTV” Tsime.

This comes after it was reported that the musician has been collecting donations from several artists in an effort to assist the Khumalo family financially with expenses that needed to be covered for her funeral.

Winnie passed away on the 7th of January after suffering a short illness. Her funeral was held two weeks later, on 18th January, at the Protea South Multipurpose Centre in Soweto.

Two months have passed since then. Rethabile now alleges that the family never benefited from the donations collected.

Sunday World reports that multiple artists have now come forward claiming that they have been invited onto a Whatsapp group where they were asked to donate money towards the funeral. The approximate amount accumulated is said to have ranged between R15 000 and R20 000.

However, many have been shocked to find out the money has never reached the family.

Speaking to the above-mentioned publication, one of the artists said, “Last week we learned that Rethabile never received our donations. She told us on the WhatsApp group, that she was frustrated.”

Bongani has since denied the allegations despite initially saying that the money was put into his nephew’s account, who later used it for personal gain, and his now threatening to take legal action against her.

Responding to Sunday World’s enquiry, he said: “I am aware of these allegations, and I told Rethabile that I’ll sue them if they keep spreading these lies. I never received the money, and I don’t know what they’re talking about.”
