Will Smith praises Tyla as the first real ‘African Pop Star’

by Sergio Miller

At just 23 years of age, the Joburg–born singer Tyla Seethal is a name that has been on everyone’s lips.

Not only is she known for producing some of the world’s biggest dance hits in recent years, but she boasts an array of talents from singing, dancing, and acting – to painting some of the most beautiful murals during her high school years. Her talents are unlike anything that the international entertainment market has ever seen before.

To date, this has seen her winning numerous awards, including one of the biggest awards accolades in the music industry – a Grammy Award.

In a recent interview, while appearing in a live stream with Félix Lengyel, the American actor Will Smith shared his thoughts on the impact that Tyla has had on American audiences.

Like Tyla, the 56-year-old father of three knows what it means to be a multi-talented individual, as he can often be seen alternating between being both an actor and a rapper.

During his appearance on the stream, Will, who has recently gotten back into music, revealed that he has been spending lots of time listening to music lately. He highlighted that among the artists that have sparked the most of his interest is the South African-born Tyla.

“I’ve been listening to a lot of world music. I love what is happening in Africa. I love what Tyla’s doing,” he said.

Praising the artist on how far she has come, he further added: “We don’t even think about it that way, but she is the first real African pop star. She is a new thing the world has not really seen,” he said.

His comments came at a time when the singer became the first African solo artist to earn 1 billion streams for her hit song Water.

In a post last week, she celebrated the milestone.
