A male nurse is set to face the court for raping a teenage patient.

Sexual violence is one of the biggest problems that the country is facing, every now and then we are seeing a new case, and it saddens me. According to MDN News, a 49-year-old situated in Duduza, Ekurhuleni appeared in court for sexually violating a 17-year-old boy along with a 19-year-old.

Allegedly, these incidents happened while he was still employed at Netcare Private Hospital in Springs in late 2023. These incidents have reignited concerns directed at sexual violence in South Africa’s healthcare system and the vulnerability of patients.

Court documents revealed that the first encounter was with the 17-year-old during his hospital stay, when the child was discharged because of medical aid funds running out, the nurse allegedly continued to visit the boy at home claiming to be providing him with medication.

This is how he got a chance to drive the boy to an open veld where he sexually assaulted him, with two instances of rape. While the case continued, a second victim came forward with the same allegations by the same nurse.

This resulted in community members confronting the nurse about his suspicious interactions with other boys in the area, the confrontation prompted his arrest after the first boy reported the assaults in a police station.

The nurse is to face the court for a formal bail application which is still pending meaning he is still going to be in custody until further proceedings.

X (previously Twitter) shared their views about the matter, one said they are disgusted by the act.

One wrote about how people abuse power for no reason stating that they are standing with the victims and demanding justice.

Abuse of power in many form must be condemned in the strongest terms. the fact that a trusted healthcare worker is accused of such actions is beyond reprehensible. we stand with the victims and demand full justice.
