Zanzou liquor licence put on hold by Gauteng Liquor Board

The Gauteng Liquor Board (GLB) has suspended the liquor license at Zanzou Night Club in Tshwane following the disturbing videos and allegations that have surfaced.

Zanzou came under intense scrutiny after a series of videos surfaced showing club bouncers assaulting, torturing and violating the human rights of club patrons who allegedly failed to settle their club bills.

Following the reveal of the shocking footage, the GLB announced it would suspend the liquor license at Zanzou with immediate effect.

“This decision follows reports of severe non-compliance and egregious violations of the law that have come to light through various media channels and regulatory investigations,” the GLB said.

Section 29(1) of the Act says all licenses must comply with their obligations and responsibilities stipulated by law, while Section 45(1) says licensed premises must adhere to all applicable laws, including municipal by-laws and national regulations.

The GLB assessed the facts of the incident, including Zanzou’s acknowledgement of the incident and determined that the acts of violence and misconduct implicated Zanzou in serious regulatory breaches.

It noted that Zanzou failed to report the criminal offences to the South African Police Services (SAPS) and said Zanzou’s statement focused more on repetitional damage instead of the safety and well-being of the victims.

The GLB decided the liquor license would remain suspended until the conclusion of a formal inquiry and the completion of the ongoing SAPS investigation.

“The GLB remains committed to ensuring liquor licence holders operate in a manner that upholds the law and protects the public. Establishments found to violate the act will face appropriate regulatory and legal consequences,” it concluded.
