Thabo Mbeki questions Jacobs Zuma’s time on Robben Island

There appears to be a battle of the former presidents as Thabo Mbeki questions the nature of Jacob Zuma’s incarceration at Robben Island prison.

In a recent meeting held by the African National Congress’s (ANC) National Executive Committee, former President Thabo questioned the existence of the trial which led to Jacob’s sentencing to Robben Island.

Thabo hinted that he believed that the trial never existed and that Jacob might have been sent as a spy by the apartheid government.

Speaking to the news publication Sunday World, a source who attended the meeting highlighted that Thabo was highly suspicious that the were no records nor witnesses to the trial which led to Jacob’s 10-year sentencing on the Island.

It was further revealed that in the meeting which took place a few weeks ago, Thabo further emphasised that Jacob’s role was to infiltrate the ANC and compromise its leaders. However not everyone is too convinced about this, another source believes that Thabo has lost the plot and reckons that he might be grumpy after coming second to Jacob in the Polokwane conference in 2007.

Speaking to the above-mentioned publication, the source, who is also a National Executive Committee member added: “When did Zuma become an agent of counter-revolution and when did he know this because they were best friends in exile in Swaziland sleeping in the same bed? What is obvious is that Mbeki has never recovered from the Polokwane conference defeat inflicted by Zuma, that is his main gripe.”
