Shaune Mogaila’s future uncertain amid ongoing court battle

Sekhukhune United FC midfielder, Shaune Mogaila will return to court in May after his case was put on hold due to outstanding post-mortem documents.

The 29-year-old stands accused of culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving, and failure to assist after the accident.

During his second appearance in the Thembisa Magistrate’s Court, prosecutor advocate Xolani Khumalo asked to postpone the matter because he was waiting for the post-mortem report and the J88 forms.

The presiding judge, Mmule Phatshwane gave in to the request and postponed the case to the 19th of May.

The matter at hand refers to when Shaune was involved in a car crash that involved three cars including his black BMW in October last year, in Thembisa east of Johannesburg.

The horror crash left a nine-year-old Gomolemo Mavimbela dead, while her mother and their neighbour’s son fought for their lives in hospital. Shaune initially fled the scene and later handed himself to the police on the same day.

The midfielder was granted bail of R20 000 in November last year.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said at the time, “According to the state, Shaune’s vehicle veered into the oncoming lane on Andrew Mphetho Road, colliding with a car carrying a woman and two children.”

She also reported that Shaune’s car was found with alcohol bottles and suspected drugs.

Soccer Laduma reports that close sources revealed that Shaune’s future is in limbo with Sekhukhune United, as he has not played an official match since his first appearance in court in October.
