How purposeless conversations can promote a healthy relationship

You know when you get to the point where you’ve gotten so comfortable with your partner that you don’t mind calling each other on a daily, spending hours speaking about a whole bunch of nothing? You don’t feel forced to talk about anything serious, and sometimes you don’t really have anything to say to each other but you still feel the need to be talking.

Not every conversation needs to be deep and meaningful—sometimes, the most random, silly chats can bring people closer. Whether it’s debating the best way to make a sandwich or laughing about a funny meme, these seemingly purposeless conversations create comfort, connection, and a sense of ease in relationships. They remind us that love isn’t just built on serious talks but also on the little, everyday moments that make life feel lighter.

The First Things First publication states that these conversations can be a break from the heavy topics and day-to-day crazies, allowing both partners to fully enjoy their partner’s personality and company.

To accomplish these conversations if you are unfamiliar with them, Psychology Today states that you engage in lighthearted conversations about water, air, and carpet, allowing your thoughts to wander without a point. Use silly questions for prompts. It is advised that you avoid getting attached to your words and don’t get defensive or aggressive, but rather stay fluid, and spontaneous.

“Since these conversations are meant to be lighthearted, you don’t need to be attached to what you’re saying. If your partner changes the topic, it’s no big deal.”

The love source also says that during these playful sessions, select a relationship code word or phrase to capture the essence of your playful engagement that will serve as a reminder of the fun you both enjoyed. To strengthen your relationship and establish a solid basis, take pleasure in having aimless discussions.
