Tips to rock sequins for any occassion

It’s the most wonderful time of the year – especially in fashion. Sequins have long been associated with glitz and glamour, often reserved for festive parties or the red carpet. However, incorporating sequins into your everyday wardrobe doesn’t have to be over-the-top. When styled thoughtfully, sequins can exude elegance and sophistication, making them suitable for a variety of occasions.

Sequins don’t have to be limited to evening wear or special occasions. Here’s your guide to wearing sequins with poise and style:

Start small with subtle accents

If you’re new to sequins, ease into the trend with subtle accents. Accessories like sequin-embellished clutches, belts, or shoes can add a touch of sparkle without overwhelming your outfit. For instance, a black dress paired with a sequin belt can create a refined yet striking look.

Balance is key

When wearing sequins, balance is everything. Pair a sequin piece with more muted, understated items to avoid looking overly flashy. For example, wear a sequinned top with tailored trousers or a simple midi skirt. Neutral tones like black, white, beige, or navy work well to complement the sparkle.

Opt for monochromatic looks

Monochromatic outfits in muted tones can help tone down the glitz of sequins. A black sequin blazer worn over a black satin camisole and tailored pants creates a cohesive, polished ensemble. The monochrome palette ensures the sequins remain the focal point without being overpowering.

Choose modern silhouettes

Sophisticated sequin looks often come down to the silhouette. Opt for sleek and modern cuts, such as a sequin pencil skirt, a structured blazer, or a slip dress. Avoid overly fussy designs and focus on clean lines to maintain a chic aesthetic.

Mix textures thoughtfully

Pairing sequins with contrasting textures can create depth and interest in your outfit. For instance, a sequinned top paired with a wool coat or leather trousers can achieve a stylish balance. The juxtaposition of textures adds sophistication and prevents the look from feeling too one-dimensional.

Keep makeup and accessories minimal

Let your sequinned piece take center stage by keeping makeup and accessories understated. Neutral makeup with a subtle glow and minimal jewellery will enhance your look without competing with the sequins. Think delicate earrings or a simple bracelet instead of bold statement pieces.

Consider daytime sequins

Yes, sequins can work for the daytime! Choose muted or matte sequins for a less formal appearance. A sequinned cardigan or skirt paired with casual pieces like a white button-down shirt or denim can strike the perfect balance between casual and chic.

Invest in high-quality pieces

Sophistication often lies in the details, so invest in high-quality sequinned items. Look for well-constructed pieces with refined finishes, as poorly made sequins can cheapen your outfit. High-quality sequins tend to lie flat and shimmer subtly rather than sparkle aggressively.

Confidence is your best accessory

No matter how you style your sequins, wearing them with confidence is essential. Own your look and wear it with poise—after all, sophistication comes as much from attitude as it does from the outfit itself.
