British royalty, Prince William, has officially landed in Cape Town ahead of the highly anticipated Earthshot Prize Awards.

The event is an annual environmental award ceremony where most of the innovative solutions to the world’s greatest environmental challenges are acknowledged. Each year five winners are rewarded with £1 million (R22 700 000) for their contribution towards environmentalism. The initiative which was launched by Prince William in 2020 is said to take place annually until 2030.

Taking to Instagram, the son of King Charles and his late wife Diana wrote:

“Molweni Cape Town, it’s great to be back in South Africa!”

“What a week ahead we have here for the fourth annual Earthshot Prize Awards and the United for Wildlife summit. Can’t wait to share it with you.”

Upon entering the country, William got busy right away by attending an Earthshot Climate Youth Leadership programme with 120 young people from 38 countries across Africa and South-East Asia in attendance.

Later he joined Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and learners from Ocean View, Masiphumelele and Langa townships and various rugby legends for a day of fun while partaking in rugby coaching and digital support classes.

“Great to also be joined by Springbok legends Joel Stranksy, Percy Montgomery, and The Beast to see how these programmes use the power of sport to transform the lives of these amazing young people,” he wrote.
