Effective tips for getting through a healthy divorce

South Africans all over the country are still finding themselves in a state of shock following the Instagram announcement that Springbok captain Siya Kolisi and his wife Rachel are on the verge of getting a divorce.

For many, the loving pair were more than just a famous couple, but were a true example of how what our country should and could be going forward, where love is the main ingredient that keeps us together.

The silver lining in this ordeal though is that they will continue to form a good relationship with one another and continue to be the catalysts for change in mzansi.

In their statement, they wrote: “While our relationship as a couple is changing, we remain friends and committed partners in raising our children with the same love and care they’ve always known.”

To assist those who are standing on the brink of separation, we have decided to delve more into this topic and explore how you, just like Siya and Rachel, can still have a healthy relationship after divorce.

Practice acceptance: While many people who get married never expect to see the day that they will divorce, divorce is a common occurrence for many. During the process, you might question how you could have done things differently to save the marriage and have plenty of “what if” but health and wellness publication Healthline recommends that the key to overcoming is practising acceptance.

“Try to remind yourself, ‘Life may not turn out as I planned, but I can still find contentment and peace,” explains the publication.

Set a parenting plan: According to Healthline, studies suggest that children who spend time with both their parents and leads to better emotional, behavioural, and psychological health.

Discuss rules and expectations: While the new adjustment might be new to you, it is just as foreign to your child. This is why parenting hub Versus Texas recommends spending time together to discuss a framework when it comes to rules and expectations.

“Discuss and agree on consistent guidelines for behaviour, discipline, and rewards. This can help prevent confusion and ensure your children feel secure and supported,” explains the above-mentioned source.

Collaborative problem solving: it is important to remember that the children are both of your responsibility. It is for this reason that Versus Texas highlights that should issues arise, it is important that you stay calm and work together on a solution.

“A collaborative approach can help reduce tension and create a more harmonious co-parenting relationship.”
