Shaving might seem straightforward, but doing so correctly can make a significant difference in the health and appearance of your skin. Proper shaving techniques can prevent irritation, and cuts, and leave your skin feeling smooth and soft.

Follow these 9 tips for shaving that will leave your skin unbothered, shiny and smooth:

Shave correctly, or don’t shave at all

What could go wrong, if you don’t shave correctly? A number of things, in fact:

Skin irritation

Incorrect shaving techniques can lead to skin irritation, razor burns, and ingrown hairs. These issues are not only uncomfortable but can also affect the appearance of your skin. Using the proper tools and techniques can minimise friction and protect your skin’s natural barrier.

Cuts and nicks

Shaving too quickly or using a dull razor can increase the risk of cutting yourself. Taking the time to prepare your skin and using the right equipment helps prevent these accidents.

Skin irritation

Shaving incorrectly or using the wrong products can cause dryness, irritation, and even infections. By following the right shaving practices, you protect your skin’s health and maintain its glow.

Tips for shaving your legs correctly

1. Prep your skin

Never dry shave! Always start by softening your skin and hair follicles with warm water. Shaving after a shower or soaking your legs in a warm bath helps open up your pores and make hair removal easier. This step also reduces the risk of razor burn and allows for a closer, smoother shave.

2. Exfoliate before shaving

Exfoliating is key to removing dead skin cells and preventing clogged razors and ingrown hairs. Use a gentle scrub or a loofah to slough away debris from the surface of your skin before applying shaving cream. This will ensure your razor glides smoothly over your skin and gives you an even shave.

3. Use a good shaving cream or gel

Shaving cream or gel acts as a protective barrier between your skin and the razor, reducing friction and the likelihood of cuts. It also helps the razor move smoothly over the skin for a more comfortable and close shave. Avoid using soap, as it can dry out the skin and increase irritation.

Tip: Your favourite conditioner will work wonders, too.

4. Choose the right razor

A sharp, clean razor is your best friend when it comes to shaving your legs. Disposable razors or razors with dull blades can tug at the hair, cause cuts, and lead to uneven shaving. Opt for a razor with multiple blades and a moisturising strip for a smoother glide and less irritation. Be sure to replace your razor regularly – a dull blade can lead to razor burn and bumps.

Tip: A men’s razor should be your go-to choice!

5. Shave in the right direction

Start by shaving in the direction of hair growth to reduce irritation, especially if you have sensitive skin. Afterwards, if needed, you can shave against the grain for a closer result. Take your time and use short strokes rather than long ones to avoid missing spots or causing nicks.

6. Rinse your razor often

Rinse your razor under warm water after every few strokes to remove hair, shaving cream, and dead skin. This keeps the blades clean and prevents them from clogging, which ensures a smoother shave and reduces the chances of cuts.

Tip: Your razor needs to be replaced often, too.

7. Moisturise after shaving

Hydrating your skin post-shave is essential to lock in moisture and soothe the skin. Use a fragrance-free moisturiser or body lotion to prevent dryness and irritation. If your skin is prone to razor burn or bumps, opt for an after-shave lotion that contains soothing ingredients like aloe vera or chamomile.

8. Avoid tight clothing after shaving

After shaving, your pores are open and your skin might be more sensitive than usual. Wearing tight clothing immediately after can cause friction, which may lead to irritation or ingrown hairs. Give your skin some breathing room by wearing loose-fitting clothes for a few hours post-shave.

9. Shave at the right time

Shaving at night can be beneficial since it allows your skin to recover and moisturize overnight without being exposed to the sun or other environmental stressors. This results in softer, smoother skin by the time you wake up.
