Fashion week is described as a week-long fashion industry event where fashion designers, brands and fashion houses from across the globe gather to showcase their latest collections to a large audience. New York Fashion Week (NYFW) is one of the most exciting and highly anticipated displays of innovation, and it is also regarded as the pinnacle of fashion.

“NYFW provides leading designers from around the world with an unrivalled global platform to showcase their collections bi-annually every February and September,” the NYFW website explains.

Due to historical context, the African continent has often been left out of conversations where fashion is concerned which has meant that African designers and celebrities are overlooked and ostracised. Times have changed as we have seen more South African visibility and representation in the global fashion stage with designers such as Thebe Magugu and Laduma making waves with their unique brands.

South African fashionista celebrities have also started to show more interest in the world of fashion, and some have been spotted attending the renowned New York Fashion Week and we are here for it. Here is a list of a few that we have seen.

DJ Zinhle

This queen has been everywhere, whether it’s on our TV screens, during her live performances or as a successful business owner. This time, DJ Zinhle has decided to expand her interests into the fashion world by attending fashion week, in partnership with hair-care brand Tresemme, and to no one’s surprise, she is looking fabulous while doing so.

Nonkanyiso Conco, who popularly goes by LaConco has also been spotted among the buzzing scene in New York. Although the TV personality is not known for her interest in fashion, she is an individual always looking to improve herself and expand her interests, therefore, it is unsurprising that she would attend this illustrious event.

Shudufhadzo Musida

As a model herself, it is fitting that former Miss SA Shudufhadzo would attend fashion week. The 28-year-old is often spotted serving effortless and stylish looks, and as a New York/Johannesburg resident, it makes sense that she would attend the event.
