Soweto Theatre to honour late Connie Chiume and 39 veterans with stars

by Sergio Miller

The late actress Connie Chiume along with several other influential people in the theatrical sphere will be honoured with a star at the Soweto Theatre.

The honour is part of the theatre’s “Celebration of Our Legends,” an initiative inspired by the Hollywood Walk of Fame stars located on the Boulevard in the United States.

In a statement released to Kaya FM last month, a statement released by the Soweto Theatre highlighted that the tribute will be to celebrate the remarkable career and the pivotal role she has played in shaping the South African arts landscape.

“The star will be unveiled as a symbol of her enduring impact and as a testament to her contributions to the cultural heritage of our nation.

“Connie Chiume’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations of artists and performers, and her memory will forever remain a guiding light in the world of theatre and beyond.”

Meanwhile, Connie is the only one of 40 inductees who have been revealed thus far. The rest is expected to be made known on the day of the event.

Speaking to news and entertainment publication Citizen News, Vincent Mitau, the general manager at the Soweto Theatre said: “By embedding these 40 stars in the walls of the Soweto Theatre, we not only recognise their immense contributions to the arts but also highlight the vital importance of creativity in our society.”

Meanwhile, the Artistic Director of Joburg City Theatres James Ngcobo told the publication that Connie’s induction had been discussed before her passing.

“Her passing came just on the eve of us honouring her with this star,” he said.

The event is scheduled to take place on 29 September.
