If you are struggling with dry eyes which is an uncomfortable feeling that requires immediate attention, massaging your eyes could provide some relief. However, it is important to understand the symptoms, how to relieve this discomfort and what are the benefits thereof.

According to the health-focused publication Healthline, “Dry eyes can occur when there is a lack of sufficient moisture and lubrication on your eye’s surface.”

The health publication also states that people frequently experience this problem, which could be caused by underlying medical issues or other elements like ageing or environmental circumstances.

Symptoms of dry eyes

All About Vision provides a few symptoms of dry eyes to look out for:

  1. Burning feeling
  2. Swollen eyes
  3. Eyes heavy and tired
  4. Swollen, achy eyes

How to massage your eyes?

The health hub mentioned above suggests a detailed method of how to massage your eyes:

  1. To start, make sure your hands are completely clean to avoid bringing any bacteria into your eyes.
  2. Next, use a warm compress to soothe your eyes.
  3. For up to thirty seconds, softly massage your closed eyelids in a circular motion with your middle or index finger. This can be done multiple times.
  4. Next, use a circular motion to massage the region that lies between your eyebrows and your eyelids.
  5. Finally, use circular motions to massage your temples.

What are the benefits?

The Atlantic Eye Institute claims that massaging your eyes improves circulation, and produces a healthy blood flow, making the tissues around the eyes and adjacent areas more healthy.

According to Healthline, “massaging your eyelids can stimulate the meibomian glands, which are responsible for producing a protective and moisturizing type of oil in your eyes.”
