As the warmer months approach, there appears to be lots that we can be excited about. Not only does the summer present us with the opportunity to go out and explore our beautiful country, but for the first time the world-renowned Lion King Jr theatre adaptation will be making its way to South Africa from November until December.

The production live production is a collaboration between the Gauteng-based National Children’s Theatre in Parktown and the Disney Theatrical Group.

This is a milestone for the show as it is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Meanwhile, it will also be the very first time that it will be performed on South African soil.

Those looking to explore fun ways of keeping their family entertained have their children witness live interactions between some of their favourite Lion King characters such as Simba, Rafiki, Timone and many more.

In addition to this audience members can also partake in the fun by singing along some of their nostalgic songs like Hakuna Matata and Just Can’t Wait to be King.

In an interview with entertainment publication, IOL, Nancy Shakerly, who is the Education and Audience Engagement manager for DTG says that South African culture has been an important part in the making of Lion King.

“South Africa lies at the heart of The Lion King, so much of director Julie Taymor’s celebrated production is influenced by music, design and culture of South African communities.”

“This is a wonderful and unique opportunity to partner with the National Children’s Theatre to grow the reach and engagement of the arts amongst young people through this beloved story,” she stated.

Meanwhile, families and schools can watch the show between 9 November and 15 December.
