Pros and cons of facials

For some, monthly maintenance includes facials that leave the skin feeling smooth and wrinkle-free.

Cassandra Bankson, skincare expert and medical aesthetican, states that facials consist of steaming your face and then adding a mask that helps with extracting or exfoliating your skin, adding that, this can be done using cream, serum, or lotion, followed by the application of moisturiser and sunscreen.

Bethany Medical Clinic advises considering the risks and benefits of facial treatments such as chemical peels, laser resurfacing, dermal fillers, and injectables.

Here are some pros and cons from various beauty hubs:

Pros:

  • Improves blood circulation: Beauty hub, Luma & Leaf states that these treatments increase blood flow to the face, promoting good circulation.
  • Exfoliates your face: Facials are known to remove all dirt that lies on our skin and stop blackheads and whiteheads.
  • Promotes skin absorption: Steaming opens pores, allowing treatments to penetrate the skin more effectively.
  • Reduces Stress: Facials engage the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve systems, which reduce anxiety and improve mood.
  • Less wrinkles: Facials stimulate collagen formation and cell turnover, resulting in firmer, smoother skin.

Cons:

  • Facial treatments are expensive and considered a luxury.
  • Some procedures can be done at home for a more affordable approach.
  • Facial treatments cause your skin to be sensitive to sunlight causing it to become red and blotchy from pressure.
  • You may experience breakouts caused by steam machines and improperly sterilised tools.
  • Extraction damage can lead to infection or scarring.
  • Dryness from exfoliation can be relieved with gentle moisturiser and avoiding sunlight.
