5 Hair-care habits that can damage your hair

It takes more than routine washing and conditioning of your hair to keep it healthy. Over time, habits that you develop may unintentionally damage your hair.

Experts say that making changes to these hidden factors often ignored in your routine can improve the health of your hair.

Here are 5 hair-care habits that can damage your hair:

Tying your hair tightly

According to Akanksha Shah Sanghvi, a Clinical Dermatologist, hair damage can occur when you wear your hair in a tight hairstyle, like a ponytail or bun. Your hair is stressed and tense in such tight ponytails which often results in breakage, especially near the hairline.

Improper brushing

The clinical dermatologist also states that people usually start at the top of their hair and work their way down when brushing but working your way up from the tips to the roots just forces all the tangles to the end of the hair, where they can eventually combine to form a single, thick knot. In an attempt to untangle the hair, tugging at this knot causes a lot of hair breakage.

A poor diet

It is important to provide nutrients to your hair for proper growth and health. Consuming a diet that lacks nutrients such as vitamins can be the reason behind hair loss and thinning of your hair, she further adds.

Hair products that contain sulphate

GK Hair professionals state that you think that a shampoo is more “cleansing” the more foam it produces. It only causes your hair to become dry and brittle by “ripping out” its natural moisture. It is suggested to ensure that your hair products are sulphate-free as these chemicals cause a lot of damage to your hair.

Heat styling without a protector

The above-mentioned source further adds that those glossy, loose curls or those silky, sleek locks we achieve with curlers and flat irons are inconceivably ruining your hair. It is advised to apply a high-quality heat protectant to prevent hair burns and breakage.
