Castor oil is a vegetable oil pressed from ricinus communis more commonly known, as castor beans. These beans are native to Africa and Asia. It contains a toxic enzyme called ricin, that is deactivated through heating, making it safe to use. The thick oil contains nutrients that are beneficial for hair and skin.

Here is a list of 5 benefits of using castor oil:

1. Natural laxative

Besides hair and skin, castor oil is most popularly known for being a natural laxative, it is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for this. “Its ricinoleic acid attaches to a receptor in your intestines. This causes the muscles to contract, pushing poop through your colon,” claims health publication WebMD.

The publication also advises against the long-term use of the oil to treat constipation as it could lead to dangerous complications.

2. Supports skin

As previously stated, castor oil contains ricinoleic acid, which is a fatty acid known for its moisturising properties and fortunately, it does not contain any harmful additives. Although it is unconfirmed, according to GoodRX Health, researchers are potentially looking at castor oil as a possible treatment for skin conditions such as psoriasis and acne.

“It can take time for the skin to fully absorb castor oil, but diluting the oil can promote absorption into the skin,” says Medical News Today

3. Boosts hair health

According to Verywell Health, caster oil increases the blood flow to the scalp, which is conducive to hair growth. Furthermore, its antifungal and antibacterial properties repel the build-up of dandruff on the scalp.

“Castor oil also contains omega-6 fatty acids—a type of essential fatty acid that may promote hair growth and reduce inflammation in the hair follicle,” says the above-mentioned publication.

4. Promotes wound healing

By creating a moist environment around it, and preventing it from drying out, castor oil is believed to have would healing properties. Healthline also notes that the main fatty acid found in castor oil may help with inflammation, which supports the healing of wounds and reduces pain levels as well.

5. Induces labour

For many decades, castor oil has been used to induce labour naturally. Both WebMD and GoodRX Health caution that although it is common, the existing research to prove this may be too little or flawed, therefore ensure to consult a doctor before attempting this.
