The newly elected Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie is proving himself to be a man of his word. Not only has he begun actively working to improve the daily operations of his department but he has also been actively at work to see that he is in the best physical condition to perform his duties.

Earlier this month, the charismatic Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader, big in stature, vowed that his body is something he will start to pay attention to.

In a post where he responded to a social media user on X (formerly Twitter), Gayton vowed that he would soon start his fitness journey by running daily.

“I did my first run from the parking lot to the airport gate because I was late this morning. I promise to join @tumisole & friends from next week to run every day. You can’t have such an overweight Minister of Sports, Arts & Culture. I must look like my job.”

I allowed plumpness to enter me, I am evicting it, don’t let yourself go ?have you run today ?lets go South Africans , I will be doing my first marathon in a month ?? pic.twitter.com/LmxgPfNGSn

Fast forward to where we are now, and he has most certainly delivered on that promise.

Recently, the 50-year-old was spotted completing the annual Nelson Mandela 5km run in honour of Mandela Day which was celebrated on Wednesday the 18th of July.

The run, however, took place on Saturday at DP World Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg where Minister Gayton was spotted looking overjoyed as he crossed the finish line.

Taking to social media he wrote: “Running a 5km race is not pap en vleis when you are so overweight, I want to thank the Nelson Mandela Foundation for inviting me, this was great fun, runners are cool.”
