After taking over the Premier Soccer League (PSL) sponsorship in 2020 after Absa pulled out in 2019, DStv has reportedly decided to end its sponsorship of the DStv Premiership a year earlier than expected, leaving the league in a state of uncertainty ahead of the upcoming season.

The official starting date of the league is yet still to be confirmed, and according to SABC Sport, DSTV is working tirelessly to secure a new sponsorship for the PSL, considering that there is less than a month left until the league is supposed to commence. There have been a few speculations about Betway potentially being the next sponsor, however, nothing has been confirmed yet.

Although uncertain, it is alleged that the reason behind DSTV pulling out of the sponsorship has to do with their current financial standing.

An insider who opted to remain anonymous spoke to Sunday World and revealed “It’s not looking good. There are no funds to continue with the partnership and it looks like the league will have to find a new sponsor. The chairman of the league is said to be finalising something with a betting company. They will have to make an announcement soon because the league has to start with new branding and new sponsors.”

There is further uncertainty with MultiChoice’s financial standing, which could potentially affect their support for both the Premiership and the MultiChoice Diski Challenge reserve league.

The premier league is an essential part of South African culture and fans are eagerly waiting for a new sponsor to emerge so they can get back to enjoying the action-packed PSL they know and love.
