Benefits of rice water as skin-care

Throughout the years, rice water has become increasingly popular for treating hair. The origins  of its use of it can be traced back to Asian countries, where rice is a staple food as it grows in abundance due to the climate.

Today, the use of rice water for skin care is gaining more and more popularity. Rich in amino acids, antioxidants and minerals, rice water contains just the right ingredients to could help maintain skin elasticity and can reduce the appearance of ageing signs on the skin.

According to several publications, here is a list of benefits of rice-water for the skin:

Brightens the skin

According to Health Shots, one of the key functions of rice water is to brighten the skin and provide an even skin tone. It keeps your skin healthy, glowing and clear.

Boosts skin barrier health

The publication mentioned above also states that using rice water on the face allows the starch content from the rice to protect the skin barrier naturally. The skin barrier is essential as it prevents the skin from drying up and being vulnerable to conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

Reduces skin irritation

A study conducted by Medical News Today revealed that the skin’s healing capacity improved by 20% for people who are prone to conditions such as eczema. This occurred after people bathed in the rice starch mixture for 15 minutes twice per day.

Provides antioxidants for the skin

Medical News Today also states that rice contains antioxidants, such as inositol. “The antioxidants assist fight the effects of free radicals, which are volatile molecules that can damage cells in the body.”

Prevents sun damage

According to Healthline, the chemicals contained in rice have been shown to help protect the skin against the sun’s rays. “A 2016 study showed that it was an effective sunscreen when combined with other plant extracts,” the publication states.

Using rice water is also convenient because unlike most skin-care products, it can be made from the comfort of your home using the boiling method or soaking method.
