Dj Maphorisa allegedly in financial trouble with Sony

by Nomonde Simelane

Dubbed one of South Africa’s most talented producers and pioneers of the Amapiano genre, multi-award-winning Dj Maphorisa finds himself amidst a scandal involving his finances. The artist is said to owe approximately R20 million, which he is now struggling to pay back.

Shock does not begin to describe the public’s reaction to the news as the producer had portrayed living a lavish lifestyle splurging millions on the finest cars and designer clothes. Furthermore, with Sir Trill recently revealing that Maphorisa has not paid him his dues, some have begun connecting the dots and attributing his lack of payment to these financial woes with Sony.

“But he can resell all those Gusheshe’s and repay that loan,” says a user on X (previously known as Twitter)

According to ZiMoja, a source in close relation to the situation revealed that the artist took an R20 million loan from multinational record company Sony, certain he would be able to return the money, which he has been struggling to do.” He took an advance from the company because he was sure that he was going to be able to pay it back, but now he’s struggling to pay it back, because of course he has to pay the interest back,” says the source to ZiMoja.

“Other artists are bearing the brunt of his debt because he needs to pay up or else he stands to the big time, because the debt is old now and he promised to pay it up,” a different source revealed to the publication above.
