It is no secret that South Africa has one of the highest unemployment rates in the world. This is especially prevalent among youth between the ages of 18 – 35 years of age.
According to StatsSA, the current youth in the country is currently 45,5% as of the first quarter of the year 2024.
But while this reality remains true for some, there are a select few who have managed to secure themselves a dream job in addition to their dream paycheck without having acquired any formal qualifications.
For one TikTok user, this was a dream come true.
Taking to social media the user who goes by the handle @beccamailulaonline shared a video of how much she earned with her first paycheck as an 18-year-old – the amount, a staggering R10 412,44.
Captioning her post, she revealed the biggest contributor to achieving this earning – short courses.
In the caption she wrote: “When people say short courses don’t have any value, but this was my salary at my first job at 18 without any formal qualifications.”

She later encouraged others to start pursuing short courses and work on revamping their CVs.
Meanwhile, the short video clip has since received lots of attention from the TikTok community, with some sharing their experiences as well.
One user added that she did a short course and is now earning a decent paycheck.
“True, hey, I did bookkeeping, and I am working for a doctor’s practice at a private hospital and earn after deductions R25000. People shouldn’t sleep on short courses.”
Others however enquired about which short courses they can enrol for since they have never earned more than R5000.
