The Airports Company SA (ACSA) has applauded the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) and Border Police for apprehending the 70-year-old accused drug mule at Cape Town International Airport.

The Hawks Narcotics Enforcement Bureau team, working with Border Police, tracked out information that led to the arrest of the UK citizen, who was due to depart South Africa last week.

A search revealed approximately 4.1 kg of methamphetamine (tik) worth around R600,000 in a secret compartment in the man’s bag.

The suspect was arrested and held at Ravensmead police station for further investigation. He was scheduled to make his initial appearance at Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

ACSA regional general manager Mark Maclean praised the swift action of the Hawks and Border Police.

“ACSA would like to congratulate the law enforcement agencies involved in this operation and thank them for their ongoing work and dedication to stamping out the smuggling of illicit drugs across our borders.

“We have a zero-tolerance approach to any criminal activity across our airport network in South Africa. This unwavering stance is integral to our mission of maintaining the highest safety and security standards. Our commitment involves rigorous security measures, continuous monitoring, and close collaboration with law enforcement agencies to prevent and address any threats.

“By prioritising safety and security, we aim to provide a secure and trustworthy environment for everyone who passes through our airports,” said Mark.

Lieutenant Colonel Siyabulela Vukubi explained: “The Hawks’ South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau team based in Bellville in conjunction with Border Police based at the Cape Town International Airport have on June 6, 2024 arrested a 70-years-old suspect on charges of dealing in drugs.

“The Hawks received information regarding a foreign national that is an alleged drug mule leaving South Africa.

“Information was immediately operationalised. The suspect was spotted and upon searching his luggage, packets of crystal methamphetamine (tik) were found in a hidden compartment.

“He will make his first appearance at the Bellville Magistrates Court on 10 June 2024.”
