Internet users have recently shared their concerns about Mzansi Magic’s Umkhokha:The Curse‘s recent storyline on the socials, with some threatening to stop watching the show.
This uproar follows after the character of a staunch Christian Khulekani Mthembu (played by Msizi Njapha) and son of the late Ithempile Lenkosi leader, recently converted and accepted the Amajudiya religion after he had visions of his late father who continuously told him to ‘come back home’ and follow Amajudiya, as his path has no light.
Umkhokha:The Curse revolves around the battle between the Mthembu and Gumede/Mzobe families for leadership of one of the biggest churches in KwaZulu-Natal, the Ithempile Lenkosi.
Ithempile Lenkosi is a generational church of the Mthembu clan which was led by Kwazi Mthembu (played by Sipho Zungu) who then died and chose his eldest son Siphamandla Mthembu (played by Nay Maps) to lead the church.
Noting the conflict among internet users, social media influencer Jabulani Macdonald took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his view.
Every storyline that happens on #UmkhokhaTheCurse is fictional and not an attack to any religion , specifically Christianity and to me i don’t get people who take it personal because this is not real life. X user commented on the post : “The path you chose has no light?, fictional or not that’s an attack on christianity.”
Another user said: “We are offended because Mthembu said ‘Christianity has no light’ yesterday. How would you feel? If the show is about amajudiya, why did they slot in christianity? They could have portrayed him (Khulekani) as someone who just left and never tried other churches.”
